Mels Opens New Virtual Production Stage in Montreal

After operating its first virtual stage for more than a year, Montreal’s Mels Studios and Postproduction is opening a new 10,000-square-foot virtual production stage equipped with a motorized, movable ceiling. Mels says this programmable, robotic feature opens up new possibilities for virtual production.

Mels’ virtual stage is an integrated platform that provides a complete virtual production solution. All services – special effects, camera, lighting, postproduction, tech – are linked by fiber optics to all the sets to provide a turnkey solution that combines agility, effectiveness and creative latitude. The virtual stage can be configured for projects of all sizes.

LED Infrastructure Overview:

  • Virtual production volume is housed in a 10,000-square-foot studio
  • Concave wall configuration with a 65-foot diameter
  • Wall height: 20 feet
  • Pixel pitch of 2.8mm (ROE BP2V2)
  • Ceiling is fully motorized and computerized
  • Ceiling has two 20×20 modules
  • Pixel pitch of 5.7mm (ROE CB5)

  • Pixel pitch of 2.8mm (ROE BP2V2)

Mels embarked on its digital shift in 2020 with the launch of a virtual production stage equipped with an LED-screen backdrop. The technology makes it possible to replace green screens and create a virtual set in real time.

In 2021, Mels received an Epic MegaGrant from Epic Games to support ongoing development of its virtual initiatives.

“Our new virtual stage will let us take our know-how to the next level and apply our advanced expertise to continue developing our services for major local and foreign projects,” says Richard Cormier, Mels’ EP for virtual production.
