Back in 1986, MSI’s founders — Joseph Hsu, Henry Lu, Jeans Huang, Frank Lin and Kenny Yu — shared a vision of bringing high-performance hardware to users. They targeted the gaming and esports industry before moving into the gaming laptop market and, most recently, media and entertainment.
Early on, the founders realized that in order to provide the right tools, they needed to talk to users to make sure their solutions met industry needs. That is also how they have been targeting the M&E market.
MSI offers three series of products — the Creator Series, the Prestige Series and the Modern Series — to serve the gamut of users, from high-end video creators to vloggers.
We reached out to MSI’s NB Marketing Director Derek Chen to find out more …
Why did MSI feel it had the right tools for the M&E market?
With the recent surge in popularity of YouTubers, streamers and other content creators, and we saw the potential for these types of users. The market generally deems the terms “high-performance laptop” and “gaming laptop” as synonymous, but the specific needs of the content creator have to be addressed. This user requires not only top performance but also personalization and professional versatility. We want to provide these users with the tools that allow them to wander freely in the world of imagination.
MSI created the Content Creation category of laptops to target these types of users. The basis behind this series was that MSI wanted to provide creators with hardware typically found in desktops, but in laptops, so that users can create on the go versus being restricted by their home PC. MSI creator laptops feature hardware from Intel and Nvidia, using the latest i9 processors and RTX graphics cards. MSI creator laptops are more than capable of doing what home desktops can do.
Let’s talk about trends. With game engines making their way into media and entertainment, that line between the two is blurring. How does it look from your perspective?
We believe game engines will make a big impact with media creation in the foreseeable future. As we know, game engines need to apply plenty of photorealistic 3D objects and effects, therefore, powerful graphics and a big-time processor are critical elements to enhance the creative flow. This is also why MSI has devoted time to build up the Content Creation laptops to satisfy various creators’ needs.
MSI works closely with chip manufacturers such as Intel and Nvidia, who also work closely with developers. Because of this relationship, MSI is able to fine-tune hardware to keep up with the demands of developers and ensure users are able to get access to that hardware as well.
Can you talk about your other M&E product offerings?
MSI has launched three series: the Creator Series, the Prestige Series and the Modern Series. These series feature the graphics performance and processing power needed by those working in 3D rendering, graphic design, video editing and photo editing. The Creator Series is catered toward high-end rendering, whereas the Prestige Series is catered toward users who are constantly working on the go. With its 16-hour battery, the Prestige Series will last throughout the workday. The Modern Series is tailored toward users who are looking to do light editing on the go. It’s great for those who enjoy vlogging.
Can you talk a bit more about the P65 Creator, which targets the professional content creator?
The P65 Creator is our most powerful laptop targeting content creators. It features the latest 9th Gen Intel Core i9 processor and Nvidia RTX graphics card to bring accelerated editing, rendering and processing power into the hands of creatives.
So this can work with 8K files thanks to the RTX technology? How many of your users would you say are working in 8K currently? And what other benefits do users get with the RTX graphics?
Yes, the Creator Series can handle 8K thanks to the Nvidia RTX graphics cards. We would say a majority of creators are transitioning to 8K nowadays, so it’s even more important now that these laptops are able to provide the power required to process this type of work.
With our laptops being Nvidia-certified, they sport Nvidia’s RTX graphics and Studio drivers, which aid in high-performance video editing, including the realtime full-8K workflows we mentioned earlier. Users are able to take advantage of the ability to run Red’s RedCode Raw in 8K at 25fps, live, all while rendering the footage ahead of it. On top of that, exporting footage in full 8K, RTX Studio can push out nearly a minute of footage in a minute of export time.
Can you talk about the Ultra 4K HD display and the True Color 2.0 technology?
The P65 Creator features a 4K UHD panel with higher pixel density and a clearly defined screen that supports True Color 2.0 technology. True Color 2.0 technology offers a 100% Adobe RGB display, providing accurate and vivid colors to get the most precise presentation for pro use. This comes in extremely handy for tasks such as color grading, as it provides accurate color depiction.
How has the mobile workstation market changed, and where do you see it going in the future?
The mobile workstation market has definitely come a long way, as these machines are now much more capable of keeping up with high-demand processing. This mobile workspace allows people to create wherever the inspiration calls. Because of this, we’ve developed software to help optimize these demanding programs. Our Creator Center software allows users to optimize their programs by dedicating processing power and prioritizing what users are doing.
